Mission Statement
The Purpose of the
Harrison County Public Library, a tax supported public service
organization, is to provide a comprehensive collection of materials in a
variety of media that records knowledge, ideas and culture in an attempt to
meet the informational, professional, cultural, recreational, and
educational needs of all the community's residents, regardless of age or
formal schooling. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting students at
all academic levels and on stimulating youth interests and
appreciation for reading and learning, and extending outreach services for
special needs and special groups.
The Library assembles,
preserves, organizes, and offers guidance in the use of printed,
audio-visual, machine readable, computer, digital and other electronic
materials that enable residents to:

Find reliable and current information and keep pace with
significant ideas and progress in all fields of knowledge.
2.
Become more familiar with their cultural heritage and with the
history and literary heritage of the local community.
3.
Supplement formal study and encourage informal self-education to
include a literacy tutoring program.
4.
Become more enlightened citizens.
5.
Develop their creative capacities and increase their appreciation
of the arts, literature and sciences.
6.
Become more capable in their occupations.
7.
Promote personal and social well-being through an enjoyment of
reading.
The Harrison
County Public Library
is a growing resource for the community!
We recently acquired
new space in the building adjacent to the current Library, and construction
is underway to renovate the space, creating a spacious, well-organized
environment for public service and education.
Formerly known as the
Corydon Public Library, the Library assumed a new name in 1998 after
receiving public support to become a county-wide free public Library. All
residents of Harrison
County with valid
identification are entitled to a free Library card.
The Library first
opened in December of 1914 at 117
West Beaver Street. This structure, one of the
original Carnegie libraries, now serves as the Frederick Porter Griffin Center for Local
History and Genealogy.

The Harrison County
Public Library is located at 105
North Capitol Avenue (Highway 337), at the
corner of Capitol Avenue
and Chestnut Street.
Parking is available along Chestnut
Street and Beaver Street, and parking lots are
available at the corner of Chestnut and Water Street, and directly behind the
Library. Both book and media (VHS, DVD and audio books) drops are located
in the alley behind the library for your convenience. There are also drop
slots located in the wall of the library facing Chestnut Street.
